The Mthembu-Salter Powell project is co-led by Khaya Mthembu-Salter and Adam Powell. They met while studying at the University of Cape town and the project was born from a shared passion for the music of artists like Wayne Shorter and John Coltrane.
They draw inspiration from modern jazz while also feeling a profound connection to South African composers like Bheki Mseleku, Kyle Shepard and Bokani Dyer and a wide variety of other artists such as Fela Kuti and Lionel Loueke.
